Autotrader: This new Bugatti sold for $19 million: photos

Bugatti has begun testing the La Voiture Noire, which is one of the most expensive new cars ever sold. The company has built just one example of the 1,479-horsepower 2-seater, which sold to an unidentified buyer for $19 million.

Nineteen million dollars, we’d like to point out, is enough money to buy yourself a brand new Chevy Spark. And a new Chevy Spark for each of your 1,396 closest friends. Assuming there’s not some sort of volume discount.

It’s a Chiron underneath
La Voiture Noire is a tribute to a 1936 Bugatti.

The Black Car (literally — La Voiture Noire translates to “the black car”) uses most of the running gear of the Bugatti Chiron. It’s built into a one-off body designed as a tribute to the 1936 Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic, which was the fastest road-legal car of its own time.

The Black Car, though, is clearly a performance car. Say that’s what matters to you. If it’s lively handling you want, you could satisfy yourself with 708 Mazda

MX-5s. If you’re really in this for straight-line speed, you could almost scratch 200 mph in each of your 316 Chevrolet Corvette Stingrays. Let’s split the difference and just get a parking garage worth of each.

La Voiture Noire

It has a 16-cylinder engine

La Voiture Noire uses an 8.0-liter W16 engine with four superchargers (it’s essentially two V-8 engines married by technology and dark magic), sending power to all four wheels through a 7-speed automatic transmission.

Or, for $19 million, you could get 158 of the 1,020 horsepower Tesla Model S Plaid  sedans and out-power The Black Car by 159,681 horsepower.

The company has built just one example of the car.

0 to 60 in 2.3 seconds

Performance numbers haven’t been released, but La Voiture Noire is a Bugatti Chiron in a unique body. That car gets from 0 to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds and claims a top speed of 261 mph. The Black Car likely manages similar numbers, or some anonymous buyer has every right to be very upset. They could have saved $16.2 million by buying a Chiron instead.

La Voiture Noire is based on the Bugatti Chiron.

Or, a Ferrari

488 GTB will out-accelerate La Voiture Noire. And for $19 million, you could afford 57 of those.

The mystery buyer hasn’t taken possession of their one-of-a-kind car yet. Bugatti recently posted images to social media of the car undergoing track testing.

One final way of looking at it: $19 million would buy you one of every car built by the Big Three automakers. One of every Chevy. And one of every Buick. And one of every Cadillac. And one of every GMC. And one of every Ford
And one of every Lincoln. And one of every Chrysler (ok, there are only three Chryslers). And one of every Dodge. And one of every Jeep.

You’d have seven figures left, in case you needed some more cars.

La Voiture Noire claims a top speed of 261 mph.
