Capitol Report: Biden to promote infrastructure, families plans in visit to southeast Virginia

President Joe Biden will visit southeast Virginia on Monday in an effort to promote his big infrastructure and families plans, with an emphasis on education.

Biden and his wife Jill will stop at an elementary school in Yorktown, Va., and the president will later speak at Tidewater Community College in Norfolk.

Last week, Biden unveiled his “American Families Plan,” a $1.8 trillion proposal that includes $200 billion for universal prekindergarten and $109 billion for two years of free community college.

The families plan followed Biden’s introduction of a $2.3 trillion infrastructure proposal. Both plans would be funded by tax increases that are unpopular with Republicans — though the president has said he wants to work with both parties.

The White House says Biden’s Virginia trip is part of what the administration is calling the “Getting America Back on Track Tour.” Biden will highlight how the infrastructure and families plans “will benefit schools — including students, parents, teachers and families,” the White House said.

U.S. stocks kicked off the week with gains, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average

climbed more than 300 points and the S&P 500
