In One Chart: Here’s how much it costs to be a fan of your favorite NFL team

It is more costly to be a fan of the Las Vegas Raiders than any other NFL team, according to research compiled by data trends site Pickswise.

The “total cost of being a fan” is calculated by the sum of the following: average ticket prices for all 16 games (home and away), average cost of one beer and hot dog a game, one jersey and one hat for the whole season, and the average price of a one night hotel accommodation for away games.

A Raiders fan in this scenario paid about $3,450 for the 2020 NFL season. Compare that with Cincinnati Bengals fans, who would have paid $2,762 to be a fan last season.

Obviously, you can be a fan without going to each of your favorite team’s games live and without buying any official team gear. But many fans enjoy following their teams in person and showing support with team jerseys and hats.

The total cost of being a fan doesn’t appear to have a strong correlation to how often teams win, as the top four costliest teams to be a fan of did not have winning records in 2020. Additionally, fans of the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs, the two best teams in the NFL in 2020, spent less than fans of more than half of the other teams in the league.

NFL teams lost an estimated $4 billion in revenue last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Marc Ganis, co-founder of Chicago-based consulting group Sportscorp and a confidant of many NFL owners.

Long-term prospects for the NFL remain strong, however, after the league recently signed a massive $110 billion media rights deal that will nearly double its media distribution revenue.
